While you may have a tangible example of your invention in your hand, a specific physical thing is not your invention, but only a particular manifestation your actual invention.
You probably need to be focused on getting the details of your product refined but your patent attorney or agent needs to help you step back and extract the essence of the invention. Its important that your claims do not just cover your first implementation, but cover you later if - "that competing product may not be the same thing as mine, but it is still my invention" - happens.
